There is no Sainik School in Dharwad itself — but Karnataka has five, and Dharwad students are fully eligible to apply to any of them, or to any Sainik School nationwide, through AISSEE. This guide walks through exactly how.
Karnataka is home to five Sainik Schools in total — Bijapur (Vijayapura) and Kodagu among the original network established in the 1960s–2000s, and Belagavi, Mysuru and Bidar among the newer schools approved under the Ministry of Defence's public-private-partnership expansion since 2022. Dharwad is not currently one of the five. This does not stop Dharwad students from applying — the nearest option, Belagavi, is roughly 75 km away, and every Sainik School in India is open to Dharwad applicants through the same national entrance exam. Details below.
Sainik Schools are English-medium, CBSE-affiliated residential schools run under the Sainik Schools Society, Ministry of Defence. They admit students into Class VI and Class IX, combine the standard CBSE curriculum with NCC training, drill and physical conditioning, and are built primarily to prepare cadets for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA) — though most graduates go on to a wide range of careers, not only defence ones.

Seats at every Sainik School are split between students domiciled in that school's home state and students applying from elsewhere. Since Karnataka does have Sainik Schools, Dharwad applicants (as Karnataka residents) are eligible for the home-state quota at any of Karnataka's five schools, and the all-India quota everywhere else.
Reserved for candidates domiciled in the state where that specific Sainik School is located. As Karnataka residents, Dharwad applicants qualify for this category at Bijapur, Kodagu, Belagavi, Mysuru or Bidar.
Open to candidates applying to a Sainik School outside their home state. Dharwad students who prefer a school in another state apply under this category there.
Separate category-based reservations (SC/ST/OBC, wards of defence personnel, girls' seats) apply on top of this split and vary by year and by school. Always confirm current figures on the official AISSEE portal before applying.
All five are within Dharwad applicants' home-state quota. Belagavi is the closest to Dharwad geographically.

Applications typically open online around September–October for the following academic year, on the official NTA portal. Only one application per candidate is accepted.
An OMR-based, multiple-choice paper covering mathematics, language, general knowledge and intelligence, usually held in January. There is no negative marking.
Results and category-wise All India Ranks are published roughly 4–6 weeks after the exam, separately for Class VI and Class IX.
Qualified candidates register for online counselling (AISSAC) and rank their preferred schools; seats are allotted by merit and preference.
Allotted candidates undergo a medical fitness check and original-document verification before a seat is confirmed.
The academic session typically begins in April, at the specific school allotted during counselling.
